A REPORT ON THE STUDENTS WELFARE AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN TAIBAH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL FOR TERM ONE 2025

Introduction: Throughout the course of the term, a group of three students from different streams in senior three came together to carry out an investigation in order to come up with a report based on the perimeters of exposure, satisfaction, comfort, inclusion and value addition.

Methodology: We distributed questionnaires, carried out one-on-one interviews, and sent out private cheats to different students in both the UNEB and Cambridge campuses across all classes in order to gather the necessary information.

Findings

ON WELFARE

  • Feeding: It was discovered that majority of the students enjoy all school meals and the most popular meals were the fish served on Wednesday together with the chicken served on Thursday inclusive of the fruit on the side. A reasonable number fancied the Tuesday supper menu; spaghetti with Irish potatoes and minced meat.
  • Accommodation: The majority interviewed were satisfied with the standards of living in their dormitories. Due to the luxurious wardrobes, spacious twin bunk beds, clean water supply both drinking and showering, and extensive care by the wardens and matrons.
  •  Student Teacher Ratio: In Taibah, the ratio of teachers to students is 1:30. The students stated that it was easier to understand certain concepts in class as it is easier to ask teachers in class. Which leaves many with personal growth and development.
  • Peer Tutoring:100% of the interviewed new students especially in senior one, year 7, year 12 and senior five appreciate the thirty minutes at the beginning of each school day that are dedicated to the famous Taibah Registration session. Students meet with their tutors to plan for the day and discuss in depth the theme of the week.

Many showed gratitude towards the parental attributes of their peer tutors.

The Student to Peer tutor ratio is 1:15, as for every 30 tutees, two tutors are assigned!

  • Dress Code: During our investigation, students expressed their gratitude to the school for allowing them to dress according to their comfort, style, and religious requirements. Firstly, many doted on the uniform as well as the fact that they can wear their casual clothes after school and over the weekends as long as they are decent and smart.
  • Infrastructure: Day scholars appreciated their new waiting area constructed near the school gate. The boys and girls equally appreciated their new areas of convenience, which provided more comfort and hygiene potential.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT;

In Taibah International School, there are a number of activities that develop students’ skills.

  • French festival: On women’s day 2025, the school arranged a French festival where students presented a number of items such as French Poetry recitations, dancing, singing, spelling bees and others. The students greatly appreciated the day’s festivities.
  • Digital Exposition: The annual digital exposition is an inter-class competition and it was an amazing sight to behold as students showcased their skills in innovation through Science and Technology. This year’s theme was “Pivoting on The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Learning Support, Access for The Disabled and Medical Aids, Focus on Harnessing Ai to Enhance Education and Healthcare”
  • Math Contests: The students appreciated the Math contest as it was an opportunity for students to embrace and flaunt their skills in Mathematics, critical thinking and resilience.
  • World scholars: The World Scholar’s Cup was truly an opportunity for Taibah Students to shine as they underwent debates, wrote essays and had team quizzes full of merriment.
  • The Grand Theatre Production 2025: Taibah International School’s grand annual show traditionally held on Good Friday, was a true spectacle as students are able to show their talents such as acting and dancing, in front of their parents, relatives, friends and teachers. Research says that it was an amazing theatre production.

CHALLENGES FACED BY STUDENTS.

  • Mental health: Some students admitted to be undergoing mental health issues stemming from life pressures, anxiety, forming and maintaining friendships, depression, social media and cyber bullying.
  • Balancing social life and academics: Striking a balance between social and academic life at school appeared among the challenges faced at school.
  • Financial illiteracy:60% of the interviewed students indicated little or no financial management skills. They said the struggle with saving money and are either skeptical or unbothered to start on their investment journeys.
  • Ecological illiteracy: Littering and single use of plastics came among the most prevalent challenges faced this term.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Peer tutors should encourage their tutees to make use of the full-time school counselor and opt for a mental health day.
  2. We encourage learners to set SMART targets that allow them to have a balanced life. (SMART stands for simple, measurable attainable, realistic\ relevant and time bound) which include social and academic targets.
  3. Learners are advised to open up free accounts with Tr. Harouna and Tr. Brian to improve on their saving plans and provide more financial literacy training.
  4. We encourage students to eat more school food and less junk for a healthier and wealthier living.
  5. We encourage the school community to do more sensitization about the effects of climate change and to improve ecological literacy as well as embrace the garbage separation program that is already in school and follow the five R’s which are; RECYCLE, REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE, RECOVER.

Conclusively, Taibah provides competitive students’ welfare and is very intentional on skills development. Many other areas for example; sports tournaments like badminton, student leadership programs, life skills education, DIT sessions, practical subjects like textiles, food and nutrition, swimming, chess and cookery are all provided and many students appreciated them.
